Floor Installation FAQs
How long does a floor installation take?
Luxury vinyl and laminate are typically one to two days for an average floor because they float. Nail-down or glue-down hardwood runs two to five days, and longer again if it is sanded and finished on site. Subfloor repairs, stairs and large square footage extend that, and we give you the schedule in writing before we start.
Do I need to move the furniture myself?
No, we can handle it as part of the job, and we will tell you what that adds to the price up front. We ask you to clear breakables, electronics and anything of personal value yourself. Appliances, wardrobes and large items are our responsibility.
Why does the material have to acclimate first?
Wood and laminate take on and give off moisture from the surrounding air. Laid straight off the truck, the boards keep moving after installation, which causes gapping in winter and cupping in summer. Leaving the material in the room for several days lets it settle to your home’s conditions first. It is the single most skipped step in a bad installation.
Can you install over an existing floor?
Sometimes. A floating floor can go over sound, flat, well-bonded tile or vinyl. Carpet always comes up. We check subfloor moisture and flatness first, and we check what the extra height does to door clearances, thresholds and appliance openings before recommending it.
